space science fiction films and series

space science fiction films list seriesSpace science fiction films and series. More will be added over time.

interstellar (2014)
a reboot of 2001: a space odyssey. some people think its the greatest sci fi film ever made, others think its nothing much. pretty easy to guess the ‘shocks’ along the way. you got to feel sorry for the son of the hero as he has shows no interest in him! like 2001 you might watch it twice with 20 years between the viewings of all those arty sequences trying to win an oscar.

Battlestar Galactica series (2004 – 2009)
new version and super awesome! Massive space battles, super effects, complicated story line with lots of twists. It might be a bit confusing at the start but stick with it if you like space sci fi and you should love it.

Sunshine (2007)
some great visuals to help this space trip along and a decent enough story for those who like sci fi.

Moon (2009)
A sort of space science fiction film as its based on the Moon in the near future. Not much future tech and is not an action movie but a good gentlish mystery film.

Dr Who series (1963 to 2014 and beyond!)
for those in the USA and other countries who do not know Dr Who then you are missing out on the so called space opera. dr who has been mostly on british tv for over 50 years and was rebooted in 2005 to great effects. it now seems like a 45 minute sci fi movie but every week during the series. micro and meta story arcs run throughout the whole dr franchise but each episode is self contained. if you like sci fi and can not find enough to watch then dr who is for you and will last you ages.

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
Super awesome! Totally different to the previous Riddick film called Pitch Black. Much higher budget and story line. Some stunning visuals. How science fiction films located in space should be.

Alien series (1979 – 2012)
Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien3 (1992), Alien: Resurrection (1997), Prometheus (2012) are the famous Alien film series are really horror films based in space but do use science fiction. Prometheus is related to the Alien films as it helps to explain where and what the Aliens are. Prometheus is a great reboot.

Babylon 5 series (1994 – 1998)
tv series that set the standard for story line and character development. More of a space soap series but enough space stuff to keep you interested and wondering what exactly will happen? If you like space sci fi then this will keep you entertained for ages. It was lowish budget to start with but it gets better and better. there were also Babylon 5 movies and off shoot series if you want even more.

star wars (1977)
star wars saga. enough said. does it get any better for sci fi and space opera fans?

silent running (1972)
a film inspired by the hippy culture. a space sci fi with eco warrior plot. a very different space film to what you would get today. a cult classic.

barbarella: queen of the galaxy (1968)
totally trippy hippy sci fi film man from at the peak of the love generation cool cats and … jane fonda OMG! pure psychedelia and one you have to watch.

flash gordon (1980)
sets out to be what it is, pure cartoon style adventure, crazy costumes, some hilarious lines and that song and soundtrack by queen. great fun.

starship troopers (1998)
meant to be great fun sci fi comedy action with alien bugs and guns. didnt quite seem to work but obviously has lots of fans who rate it highly.

dune (1984)
stunning film, especially if you love alien world science fiction films.
